Why You Should Do Blood Sugar Test

There are numerous reasons you should conduct blood sugar testing. However, the most important benefit of these tests is the acquisition of crucial information.  These information help you in the management of diabetes. For instance, the information can be used in:

  • Helping you monitor your treatment plan and help you achieve treatment goals.
  • Giving you a clear understanding of how your blood sugar is affected by your diet and exercise.
  • Identifying when blood sugar levels are too high or too low.
  • Understanding how illness and stress can influence and affect your blood sugar levels.
  • Also, monitoring the effects of medication on your blood sugar levels.

 

When To Do Blood Sugar Test

Having understood the why, it is equally important to understand the when. Your doctor will advise you regarding this. However, the frequency of blood sugar checks is dependent on the kind of diabetes you have.

  • Type 1 Diabetes: If you are suffering from type 1 diabetes, it is usually recommended that you carry out the test at least 8 times. Tests should be conducted right before snacks and meals, before sleeping and taking naps, before and after exercising, and in the middle of the night. However, if you suffer an illness, change your treatment plan or change your daily routine, you should increase the frequency of tests.
  • Type 2 Diabetes: Patients with Type 2 diabetes and use insulin to manage the condition, testing frequency is at least twice or thrice per day. Readings have to take before meals and sometimes right before going to sleep. However, in some cases where patients use diets and exercising and other non-insulin treatment plans, daily monitoring of blood sugar may not be necessary.

Know your target range

However, even with monitoring, you need to understand the target range that will work for you. In most cases, your doctor will give you a target blood sugar based on your age, diabetes type, and its severity. Also target will depend on the duration of illness, health status, and pregnancy complications in the case of women .

However, standard guidelines recommend:

  • Sugar levels ranging from 80 to 120 milligrams per decilitre. This is for individuals aged 59 and younger who do not have any complications stemming from the condition.
  • Sugar levels ranging from 100 to 140 mg/dl. This is for individuals aged 60 and older. Also for individuals who have medical conditions such as kidney diseases.
